Faith History

Faith Lutheran Church in Arlington, Virginia, traces its roots back to Grace Lutheran Church in downtown Washington, D.C. In the 1920s, members of Grace wanted to start a new congregation in what was then the very “distant” suburb of Arlington. (At the time, this was highly controversial because some believed that no one would attend a small suburban church, and that faith could only be grown in established, inner-city congregations like Grace.)

But, the visionaries persisted and, in 1933, during the Great Depression, Faith Lutheran Church was founded.

Small and struggling at first, the congregation gathered to worship each Sunday in homes of church members. After years of fund-raising and saving during the depression, the original part of the sanctuary was opened in 1938.

The addition and expansion of the sanctuary was completed between 1943 and 1945, during the shortages and hardships of World War II.

Today Faith is a vibrant and active congregation, drawing young families, young and tenured working professionals, and retirees alike.

So, perhaps we could say that the name Faith is a perfectly fitting and proper one for this congregation. The founders of Faith relied on their faith in Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit to grow this congregation into what it is today.

We continue to be blessed and fed with the fruits of their service some 77 years later, as we continue to build the body of Christ here in Arlington, committed to serving all those in need here in our community, and in the whole world.
